Even Smart Companies Are Dumb About Crisis Communications

Apple, the company that invented the smart phone, was dumb about the way it handled the instant crisis of the awful Maps app on its iPhone 5. You don’t want to find yourself in the in the same predicament if something goes wrong at your company.

Apple fans were worked up into a tizzy in anticipation of the new phone with the usual lines circling Apple stores when the phone went on sale. But much to their dismay, Google Maps was nowhere to be found. Apple had substituted its own Maps app. What a clunker. Commitment is a Virtue and a Necessity in Building Your Personal Brand

The other day I sat by the phone waiting for the call about a potential coaching assignment. The phone never rang.

The person who booked the session never bothered to call or write to explain why she didn’t follow through. Was she sick? Did she have to go out of town suddenly? I’ll never know, even though I sent her an email asking. She did eventually call wanting to set up a training session. I declined.

When Your Stump Speech Goes Stale

How’s your stump speech?

You’re not a politician, you say. You don’t give stump speeches. But think about it. If you’re on a company’s new business team, or a member of their speaker’s bureau, you’re giving stump speeches all the time. They’re just called media interviews or presentations.

Aren’t they similar to what the presidential and congressional candidates are doing right now in their stump speeches? You’re pounding away at your key messages every time you speak.
